Obama Defends Bush-Era Secrets

President Obama’s administration is moving aggressively to protect what the government insists are “state secrets” from a Bush-era wiretapping program.

Justice Department lawyers filed an emergency motion Friday with a federal appeals court in an effort to block a lower court’s order that the government must show lawyers for the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation a copy of a document indicating that the group’s communications were being intercepted. The document has been the subject of a running legal battle since the papers were accidentally sent to attorneys for the group in 2004 and subsequently retrieved.

“Disclosure of the material at issue here would cause exceptionally grave harm to the national security and result in irreparable injury to the United States,” the Justice Department wrote. It said information about the surveillance program is considered “Top Secret — Sensitive Compartmented Information.”

The government wants the wiretapping lawsuit thrown out on the basis of the state secrets privilege, but a federal judge in San Francisco ruled that the privilege is overruled by a law Congress wrote, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

Paglia...FTW?

Feb. 14th, 2009 | 02:24 pm

Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine the likes of Berkely and Lenny Bruce being referenced in opposition to a Democrat agenda, but Camille Paglia makes no bones about her distaste for the proposed resurrection of the Fairness Doctrine.

Worth the listen, many times over. Paglia pulls no punches.

"They've totally betrayed the soul of the party to even mention this."

"It's immature for people of one political party to try to squelch and try to erase, okay, the thoughts of another."

"NPR. PBS. The Universities. What more do liberals want?"

The bit at the end where she lambasts the supposed "conspiracy" of talk radio is particularly poignant.

With everything we've been hearing recently of the Republicans who have betrayed their party, it's nice to hear someone on the other side calling their own out for the very same thing.

I may never leave my apartment.

So, after years of refusing to cave, I caved. I bought an Xbox 360. I have all of one game. Guitar Hero 3. I've played it until my fingers were raw. The thing is, though, that's not even the half of how awesome this thing is.

With the new Xbox software, streaming your Netflix movies to your television is as easy as three simple steps. I now have the current season of Heroes, the first two seasons of 30 Rock, the first four seasons of The Office, the first season of the original Star Trek, the first season of Weeds, The Shining, Barry Lyndon, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Eraserhead, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Zach Galifianakis: Live at the Purple Onion waiting patiently for me in the comfort of my living room.

On top of that, using a nifty piece of software, I'm able to connect the Xbox to my Mac and stream my entire music/video library, as well.

God help me if they find a way to get Hulu streaming to it.

This is a good day.

SUSHI!!!

Nov. 29th, 2008 | 01:01 pm

Thursday marked one year for me and the girl, so tonight, we celebrate. We're going to Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse in Chattanooga. One of those places where the chefs cook in front of you and do all the fancy tricks with the knives and such. Then it's out for a walk through downtown. Rain, rain, go away.
